Hardware Wallets

Bitcoin wallet hardware is theoretically meant to accomplish two often contradictory goals: provide excellent wallet security and provide it in an intuitive and user-friendly format. These two considerations as well as budget should determine which hardware to purchase.

All the products we review in these pages do offer robust security, however hardware is often falsely conflated with cold storage. While some solutions, like Trezor, keepkey and bitlox do qualify, other solutions like coolwallet are more accurately described as fancy and secure two factor authenticators, while still others like ledger actually require setting your private key online, which sort of invalidates any cold wallet pretension.  Please find below a list of all bitcoin hardware wallet reviews we've done.

The transaction mechanism varies by device. Trezor, Ledger and Keepkey (the latter which is just a cloned Trezor, but with better engineering), connect via USB to your computer and sign transactions by entering a toggled pin on their screen - a decoder which is displayed on the second screen or, in the case of ledger, in the enclosed booklet. Bitlox connects via bluetooth to a mobile app, while Case is entirely self contained, with signatures done on device with a finger swipe. If we were to choose the least user friendly, it would be a tie between Case, which is difficult to set up, and Bitlox, whose myriad of advanced features can complicate operation.

In our opinion, if money is no issue we would buy Keepkey, which is essentially Trezor but more attractive with a screen much easier to read. For the privacy minded amongst you, check out our review of Bitlox. If you are keeping it at $100 or less, go Trezor.
